OK
I know you've all had your fill of empty promises when it comes to my sharing of the coveted "Defective Detective" script. But guess what, I just purchased a scanner!
Once it's all set up and functioning properly I'll be sure to scan in every page of the script and share it with all who wish to peruse it's pages electronically.
Just reply to this posting or send me an email and I'll put you on my list of people to send it to.
Peace!

Jon,
I'd love an electronic copy, my address is in my profile. Years ago I read a draft dated January, 28 (my birthday) 1996. It absolutely blew me away but I unfortunately lost it. I still have alot of images burned in my head. My favorite is the little girl's father watching the news broadcasting the kidnapping of his daughter right outside his apartment, and he throws a beercan out the window and we see it bean the reporter in the head on the tv! Alot of other random images like the stormtroopers chasing the heros down a huge tower of file cabinets, a mirror sea, two giant boy scouts, and the image of the girl's bed flying out of her room and over the nighttime streets of the city. A beautiful script. I'd describe it as "Little Nemo in Gilliamland". The only trouble I had was the way alot of it was written. It seemed like there were alot of really long passages explaining the signifigance of things, alot of which was pushing it a little. Gilliam was definitely grinding a few axes with this script in terms of environmental and social concerns. A recurring motif is signs, advirtisements and such. Many of these ideas seemed really good but they might go over the head of anybody who thought "2 Fast 2 Furious" was the shiznit.
What is the date of the draft on your copy? |

Ahhhhhhhh!
Apparently the file is even too big for me to email from my work email address.
Does anybody know of an alternative way to distribute the script? If everybody is on AIM I could probably do a file transfer through it, but of course we'd have to be online at the same time.
If anybody has any other solutions let me know
thanks!

Nice job Jon, thanks for your hard work in scanning each and every sheet! I'll be reading this with interest.
Btw, the link will be good for quite a few downloads (and it's very fast). I'd suggest that when it fails, someone reupload it and re-paste the link for whoever misses it. I'll do it myself.

I am about 20 pages in at the moment. It's been a mad day... but initial impressions are of a very Brazil-esque Gilliam vibe. |

Read the whole thing in one sitting. It's great. I thought it moved a bit fast, but the story itself is just terrific. Layer by layer of Gilliamesque black humor, mixed with an absolutely impossible story. It reminded me in parts of Time Bandits, Brazil, Munchausen, and Fisher King, just in the moments I could pick out. Same old Terry (in a good way). Enjoy people |

It's interesting you should mention that, Bruttenholm, cause I just finished reading it a second time and the thing I kept thinking about was how reading these things isn't even close to seeing them. As great as this script is, I feel like the process of taking it from page to screen will only add to the richness, as ideas are retooled and fleshed out over the process. The actors will also have an effect. For instance, the first time I read it I imagined Nick Nolte with his big, gruff demeanor and gravel voice contrasting exquisitely with all the whimesy around him. This time I imagined Nick Cage, and it altered my perception of the character completely, as Cage would be much more cynical and manic, but would add dimension and soul. Think about Cage in Scorsese's surreal "Bringing Out the Dead". Bruce Willis has been mooted for the role, but I find him harder to imagine. I always liked the idea of TIm Robbins in Gilliam-land, but he's not a big enough star.
I don't know who could play the knight, it's small enough for an unknown, or maybe an actor of less marquee value but high talent like Sam Rockwell. I imagined Cameron Diaz as the Damsel, although I suppose nowadays one might cast Rachel McAdams or Scarlett Johansen. Mr. Bigg has alot of preachy rambling dialogue that needs to be delivered with edgy comic precision to be palatable. Someone with a knack for clever improv like Jim Carrey or Vince Vaughn might work. Vaughn can be very intimidating and funny at the same time so he could nail it, and it would be great to see a dozen of him interacting with each other. That part reminded me of City of the Lost Children squared! Please no Will Ferrell, thank you.
And Gilliam could cast Dakota Fanning as the little black girl... just kidding... or am I?
As for production design it would be great for Gilliam to collaborate with Alex McDowell again, who has become the go-to guy for creating whimsical fairy tale worlds for visionaries like Burton and Spielberg and Fincher. I wouldn't mind seeing him work with Guy Dyas again either. Bo Welch would be amazing but he's a director now. Rick Heinrichs also good, but a little too in unison with Burton's sensibilities.
I really hope Gilliam takes a que from Rodriguez and uses CGI to make his masterpiece on a budget. This really should be his next project. I'm not the biggest fan of Good Omens. Don't get me wrong, I'll see that movie in a second if he does it, but Terry G's got bigger fish to fry, namely "The Defective Detective"!

Possible Spoilers!!!
Wow!! Superb. Some absolutely brilliant scenes and a great story. I think it would be interesting to see Gary Oldman in one of the main roles. Nicolas Cage as Joe and maybe Oldman as Bigg, similar to his role in fifth element? Just my thoughts though. I thought Bruce Willis as Dimitri but then he's a big star and it's only a relatively small part.
Did anyone else think that the little girl was going to grow up to be his wife the way the boy was him?
I'm very keen for this to get made as it is wonderful. |

>"I really hope Gilliam takes a que from Rodriguez and uses CGI to make his masterpiece on a budget."
I don't agree with you Max. For me, the interesting thing with Gilliam cinema is that it deals with flesh and bones, really tactile things and the conflict between those things and the fantasy world they're in... I mean, I'm not against CGI but Rodriguez pushed it too far : he over-used it, and "Sin City" as well as this "Captain sky" or the latest "Star wars" are too artificial, too bright, too dead ! You can't have emotion while watching those things ! I really hope that Gilliam will use CGI very prudently in his next films 'cause it could make his cinema lose its soul... |

Is it me or would Gary Oldman, Bruce Willis be too predictable for parts in the movie. How many times does Gary Oldman or Bruce Willis need to play a cop? They're great though! Don't get me wrong.. |

You're probably right Vince, a tad too predictable. That's probably why they were first to spring to mind. |
